Burgundy
Nowhere else in France is the concept of 'terroir' so significant. Jancis Robinson points out that it is this feature of Burgundy that is so unique, in addition to the care and attention the most diligent growers take over their vines. 'The people who own Burgundy's fabulously expensive plots of vines also tend them personally, which I find both admirable and reassuring'. In a region where the soil changes every few yards, you can be sure that no two glasses of Burgundy taste the same. And this is what makes the area so unique.
With an abundance of appellations and vineyards from smaller producers, Burgundy is capable of producing some of the finest wines in the world from famous vineyards such as Montrachet Grand Cru as well as the more affordable wines from less-exalted vineyards. Due to the abundance of appellations and vineyards in Burgundy, it is imperative that we research extensively into which producers are offering the finest expressions of the myriad styles available. Regular visits to the region are undertaken every year, to seek out the best in new growers and to search for the best of the new wines and new vintages from our trusted longer-term winemakers.
We have compiled a choice which we believe is an accurate representation of Burgundy at its best. Wines from the heartland of Burgundy, the Cote d'Or with its full-bodied, yet supremely refined red wines from the Cote de Nuits and a selection of superb white wines from the Cote de Beaune, Chablis - a great choice for fish dishes. The choice is wide indeed. Also on offer are lighter, more approachable and affordable wines from the Chalonnais and Mâconnais regions, with the ever popular Beaujolais wines providing excitement and instant pleasure.
