Vintage Report

The Vintage

All growers echoed the same sentiment namely that the quality of the wines in their cellars and barrels by early November 2009 was a wonderful surprise. No one thought it possible at the end of August 2008, in fact, at that time the mood was decidedly gloomy as the poor summer had not ripened the grapes sufficiently and the level of rot, even in the well-treated vineyards, was high. One or two established growers of high repute even were thinking that they may just as well leave their crop on the vine!

However, from the end of that month, throughout September and into October the weather dried up completely and the cool north wind arrived. As a result the fruit was able to ripen and concentrate beautifully.

The Wines

The end result is wines of real charm, with a tenderness and a clarity of fresh Pinot Noir. They have more fruit and substance than the 2007’s and more elegance than the 2006’s. All in all the best wines are stylistically classic red Burgundies with a precise, hugely appealing typicité.

This is a growers’ vintage. For those who rose to the challenge, the results are clearly very gratifying. Sensitive winemaking has produced wines with gentle tannins coupled with very little over-extraction. Freshness and purity were oft-used descriptors, for red and white Burgundy alike.

The 2008s merit their time in the spotlight, these wines are approachable and fresh yet rich and exciting. Do not be distracted by the early excitement of the 2009s, the 2008 wines are ripe, concentrated and pure. A vintage to enjoy in its youth (relatively and according to status), with the finest wines also promising good ageing potential.

Buying Director

'One of the hallmarks of the 2008 vintage was great purity.'

'The acidity and the energy combine in this vintage. It is the energy which makes it seem fresh. It is lively rather than acidic and this is helped by the purity of fruit.'

'Another notable character is the spice, from warm and exotic to high toned and lively. It differs from the airy perfume scent of the 2007. This distinctive and widely spread spicy character combines with the floral scented aromatics of a cooler vintage.'
