Visiting the Shop

Milroy's of Soho

Milroy's of Soho was founded in the mid-1960's by brothers John and Wallace Milroy. Milroy's of Soho started life as a wine merchant, trading large volumes of wine to private customers and restaurants alike. Single malt whiskies were barely a blip on the radar in those days. Over the course of the next couple of decades, John and Wallace acted as ambassadors for single malt whisky, sometimes driving to Scotland to source whiskies direct from distilleries to offer to their customers in London. In the process they established Milroy's of Soho as the place to go for whisky, whether it be a gift for a loved one, a rare collectible or bottling a cask.

Today, the two Philips, Philip Shorten and Philip Kirk, maintain the tradition set by the brothers Milroy, indulging the passions of whisky enthusiasts throughout the world.

Their eagerly anticipated monthly newsletter is sent to an ever growing global mailing list to join the mailing list, please click here. While whisky is our stock in trade, wine remains an important element of the operation, reflected in the well chosen selection of fine wines from around the world.

Amongst all the hype and hoopla that surrounds a Bordeaux en-primeur campaign, on can easily overlook the fact that the quality of wine being produced in this huge region is better than ever. It is not just the Crus Classes and their Right Bank equivalents that have benefited from improved management and winemaking practices. The so called 'lesser' appellations are producing wines that deliver bright fruit, a degree of complexity, savoury bite and authentic Bordeaux character. After spending last week in modest Bordeaux country (in Entre-Duex-Mers), I was highly impressed by the quality of many modest offerings under 15 Euros a bottle; white, rose and red. Without wanting to beat our chest too much, the 2004 Domaine de Courteillac featured in our Summer Offer at under £10 a bottle is one such wine; plush plummy and dark cherry fruit lent a twist of herbal complexity. This is the sort of wine that gives Bordeaux a good name, and there are many more out there!
