2014 Chablis, 1er Cru, Mont de Milieu, Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin (12 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Chablis

The 2014 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu comes from the sector of the vineyard with a southerly exposure, so it tends to develop more fruit intensity and sees around 25% wood contact, though the barrels are older than the Vaillons. The nose displays commendable precision with scents of white peach and freshly sliced pear that mingle with subtle limestone aromas. The palate is fresh and very well defined. I like the acidic drive to this Mont de Milieu courtesy of the 2014 growing season. It neatly counterbalances the fruit intensity of the vineyard, allowing more saline and mineral notes to surface towards the finish, which lingers in the mouth. There is a sense of completeness here and it comes highly recommended.

Vinous

(malo done and assembled): Bright yellow-green. Aromas of white nectarine and white flowers reminded me of Condrieu. Sweet, fat and rich, combining excellent density with bright acid lift. Already long on personality.

Vinous

Bright yellow. A distinctly sunny style for the vintage, showing almost Condrieu-like aromas of peach and pear complicated by underbrush and a yeasty, marrowy quality. A step up in texture, thickness and breadth from the preceding samples but with its glyceral richness nicely cut by lively lemony acidity. Delivers the combination of richness and penetration of the vintage’s better examples. This fruit was picked at 12.5% potential alcohol and chaptalized to 13.2%.
