2015 Chablis, 1er Cru, Fourchaume, Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin (6 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Chablis

Bright yellow. Very ripe aromas and flavors of peach, pear and honey; in a more southern, Chassagne-Montrachet style. For all its volume, this wine boasts harmonious acidity that gives it a juicy quality and much more Chablis character than the nose suggests. Finishes tasty and long.

The 2015 Chablis 1Er Cru Fourchaume was tight and rather conservative on the nose but gradually opened with light white citrus and honeysuckle scents and later, a hint of lemon curd and apricot. There is something quite “Vaillons” about these flattering aromatics. The palate is taut and linear with just a touch of tangerine and nectarine. I appreciate the harmony of this Fourchaume and the manner in which it gently fans out on the finish. This is simply a delicious 2015 Fourchaume and one to be savored since there is not a 2016 vintage due to hail.

Vinous

The 2015 Chablis Fourchaume 1er Cru feels oakier on the nose than its peers, although it is simpatico with the fruit: dried mango, white peach and a touch of green apple. It is a commercially savvy, consumer-friendly bouquet. The palate is well balanced with good depth, rounded in texture and (again) comparatively oaky. Yet it maintains admirable tension and the finish is well proportioned; leaving a light grassy note on the aftertaste. Fine. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Vinous

(from vines in Vaupulent; 13.3% alcohol; this wine began in 50% new oak, the highest percentage among Droin’s premier crus): Bright, pale yellow-green. Sexy nose combines lime, mint, white pepper and spicy oak. In a distinctly generous, velvety style; more about opulent fruit than minerality. Droin admits he picked these vines about three days later than he had originally planned, owing to the need to harvest the hailed-on parcels first. Finishes fat and a bit warm.
