2015 Chablis, 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre, Domaine Samuel Billaud (6 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Chablis

The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre underwent the same vinification as the Mont de Milieu. It has a complex bouquet with sea spray/flint aromas at first, a touch of Golden Delicious apple and smoked walnut. The palate is very balanced and poised with a crisp line of acidity and a generous finish that embraces tropical fruit (guava and passion fruit) but does not allow them to dominate proceedings. This is another impressive 2015 from Samuel Billaud.

Vinous

The 2015 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a taut, flinty, smoky bouquet that gains focus and intensity as it unfolds in the glass. The palate is well balanced, with a fine thread of acidity, but does not quite deliver in the second half. There is a pleasant spicy note here, but I would have preferred more energy and precision. A touch of reduction should ameliorate with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Vinous

(a blend of very old vines in Monteé de Tonnerre and 35-year-old vines in Chapelot): Brisk, slightly high-toned aromas of white peach and white flowers. Concentrated and tactile, with surprising sweetness of fruit more than buffered by slightly bitter minerality. Finishes tight and vibrant, with crushed stone, menthol and saline nuances. Aging on the lees is bringing reduction but also a better extraction of minerality, says Billaud, adding that 2015 is a vintage with sun and concentration, like 2013, 2011 and 2009.

Vinous

(bottled last November): Bright, light yellow. Crystallized lemon peel, wet stone and a hint of menthol on the nose. Smooth and thick in the style of the year but also benefits from racy, stony acidity. The fruit flavors of pineapple, grapefruit and lemon are enlivened by the wine’s strong mineral component. Too rich to be austere but this surprisingly backward, dense, complex wine will nonetheless need time in the cellar. Very 2015 in style but in a good way.
