2015 Chablis, 1er Cru, Montee de Tonnerre, Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin (6 x Bottle)
(production was cut in half by the pre-harvest hailstorm): Pale, bright yellow. A touch of oyster-shell reduction to the aromas of lemon, lime, baked bread and flowers. At once silky and highly concentrated, with a light herbal element contributing to the impression of inner-mouth energy. Finishes long and suave. A year ago I wondered if this fruit was ripe enough when it was picked quickly after the hail but the bitter edge it displayed then has disappeared and the finish is quite palate-staining.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2015 Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre has an expressive bouquet with white flowers tincturing the citrus fruit and apricot blossom and subtle sea spray aromas developing in the glass. The palate is very well balanced, borrowing some of the fatness from the Vaulorent but counterbalanced by a fine thread of acidity. It dovetails into a waxy-textured, slightly pithy, nutty and almost Meursault-like finish. This is a very finely tuned, delicious, sappy Montée de Tonnerre.

Vinous
Pale yellow-green. Musky, subtly complex aromas of lime blossom, mint and crushed herbs plus an element of iodiney reduction. Then dense, ripe and sweet, showing lovely limey, floral lift in the mouth and a repeating herbal element. Very concentrated wine with a tactile impression of dry extract, but the finish is a touch aggressive and hard-edged. Droin said that these vines were ready to harvest at the time of the hail, but only time will tell if the wine’s bitter edge will be absorbed. Production here was just 23 hectoliters per hectare.
