2015 Chablis, Grand Cru, Valmur, Jean-Paul & Benoit Droin (6 x Bottle)

France Burgundy Chablis

The 2015 Chablis Valmur Grand Cru comes across a little oaky on the nose, but the fruit handles it well. The bouquet is detailed and focused, with hints of dried honey and nutmeg developing in the glass. The palate displays good balance, a fine line of acidity and a smooth, almost creamy texture; hints of almond and white chocolate emerge toward the finish. This feels a little obvious in terms of winemaking at the moment, but I suspect it will evolve into a delicious Valmur. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur offers scents of yellow flower, lemon curd, white peach and just a faint touch of fennel on what is a complex and quite mercurial bouquet. The palate is cohesive and harmonious and maybe more resinous and pithy in style, with touches of dried honey and dried quince toward the finish. I feel this may close down for three or four years and then reopen, so cellar this away.

Vinous

(13.3% alcohol; 40% oak): Pale yellow. Yellow peach and apricot aromas are held in check by solid minerality. Densely packed, broad and dry, conveying a distinctly glyceral texture in the style of the vintage. Ripe yellow fruit flavors are accompanied by a menthol element. Finishes warm and a touch bitter.

Vinous

Pale, bright yellow. Reticent nose hints at lemon zest and powdered stone. Very rich and dense but uncompromisingly dry and youthfully inexpressive. This distinctly masculine Chablis grand cru boasts terrific material for aging but is very closed, even austere, in the earthy going. Finishes with a lively citrus element and rising length.
