2015 Les Champs Libres AOC Bordeaux

France Bordeaux Bordeaux AOC

The 2015 Les Champs Libres has really come together beautifully since I last tasted it. Suave, silky and beautifully textured in the glass, the 2015 speaks to harmony above all else. Aging in barrel has softened the contours nicely in this super-expressive white. Hints of slate, mint, green pear, jasmine and a kiss of French oak are beautifully woven together in a white wine of total class and pedigree. I loved it.

Vinous

The 2015 Les Champs Libres exudes richness, intensity and brilliance. Fermentation in barrel and less stirring give the Champs Libres striking mid-palate depth and unctuousness, but without sacrificing purity or detail. Champs Libres is built around a core of Sauvignon Blanc (of Loire Valley origins) with a dollop of Sémillon. The interplay of textural richness and bright, salivating energy is compelling.

Vinous

The 2015 Les Champs Libres has a very attractive bouquet of gooseberry, fresh pear and light Granny Smith apple aromas, well defined and more mineral-driven than its peers. The palate is lightly spiced on the entry, with a fine bead of acidity and impressive tension. The slightly peppery, asparagus-tinged finish feels long and tender. Superb. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.

Vinous

The 2015 Les Champs Libres, made by the Guinaudeau family of Château Lafleur, is developing nicely in bottle. The nose offers scents of lemon thyme and nettle and touches of orange blossom and nashi pear, all well defined and vibrant. The palate is lightly honeyed on the entry, developing an attractive spiciness that becomes more conspicuous toward the finish, which features stem ginger on the aftertaste. Maybe it has advanced a little more than expected; nevertheless, it still comes recommended.
