Terra Alta, meaning ‘high land’ in Catalan, is the most southerly (and high-altitude) DO in Catalonia’s wine territory, and is responsible for growing an astonishing 75% of Spain’s Grenache Blanc – much of which was historically on the dull side. But the region is undergoing something of a quality push, with several ambitious producers focused on producing more refined wines to mirror those of its near neighbour Priorat, further north. This white wine, made from Macabeu (aka Viura), sits somewhere between a Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay in style, with a slight oxidative, bruised-apple note that would make a great match for hard cheeses.

Tasting notes

A fascinatingly complex and characterful expression of Macabeo, 24 hours of skin maceration adds texture and complexity to what can be a relatively simple grape variety. Expect notes of fleshy stone fruits, white flowers, lemon peel and gra pefruit, and a vibrant palate with textural fruit and touches of minerality.
