A small, family-owned producer with just 35 hectares of vineyards, Bouza nonetheless sits alongside the larger, more lavish Garzón at the summit of Uruguay’s fast-evolving wine scene. Inspired by their Galician roots, they were the first to plant Albariño in the country. Perfectly adapted to the Atlantic climate, here the grape yields a leaner rendering than the more exotic fruit rendering of Spain’s Rias Baixas. Fast becoming Uruguay’s signature white grape, in Bouza’s hands it has a certain richness and weight, buoyed by attractive stonefruit notes, though still with classic acidity and salinity. Give it 12 months bottle age and it will develop further fatness and tropical tones.
